Current consumer SSD price direction
The chart answers a narrow question: how listed US retail prices are moving for comparable mainstream internal Gen4 NVMe drives. It does not blend portable drives, enterprise hardware, or the newest Gen5 premium into one vague average.
How it is calculated
Product-week medians before basket statistics
Each active SSD contributes the median of its valid Monday, Wednesday, and Friday observations. Those product-week values produce the displayed mean and median. Price per TB uses nominal manufacturer capacity.

Retail SSDs are not raw NAND prices
A finished SSD price also reflects its controller, firmware, endurance tier, warranty, product positioning, distribution, and retailer inventory. This series must not be described as NAND contract or spot pricing.
Historical reconstruction
The SSD trend now starts in August 2025.
The backcast uses the same six exact products as the launch basket: Kingston NV3, Crucial P310, and WD_BLACK SN7100 in paired 1TB and 2TB capacities. Public daily listed-price histories are collapsed to monthly product medians, normalized per terabyte, and chain-linked across overlapping products.
The vertical marker identifies August 10, 2026, when the monthly PriceHistory reconstruction hands off to live MPC collection. Both trend segments are rebased to 100 there, so the index measures movement without claiming that two independently observed dollar levels are identical.
Historical values are PriceHistory.app listed-price observations, not confirmed transactions.

Reading the chart
What does the SSD price chart measure?
It measures observed Amazon US listing prices for a controlled basket of new internal M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSDs in 1TB and 2TB capacities.
What is the main number on the chart?
The default measure is nominal US dollars per terabyte. It makes the 1TB and 2TB capacity groups easier to compare than full-drive prices alone.
What do mean and median SSD prices show?
The mean responds to every basket member and can reveal broad early movement. The median is less affected by one unusually high or low listing. Both are published for context.
How often is the SSD price chart updated?
Raw listing observations are scheduled for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Valid observations are collapsed into one public weekly point per product.
How far back does the SSD price history go?
The default trend begins in August 2025 with a monthly six-drive reconstruction, then hands off to the live weekly MPC basket in August 2026.
Are these the prices buyers actually paid?
No. They are observed listing prices. Taxes, checkout changes, coupons, membership pricing, shipping, and final transaction prices may differ.

Which SSDs are tracked?
The launch basket targets Kingston NV3, Crucial P310, and WD_BLACK SN7100 product families in both 1TB and 2TB capacities, subject to live eligibility checks.
Why track both 1TB and 2TB SSDs?
They are mainstream consumer capacities with enough product depth to form repeatable retail samples. Publishing both also shows whether capacity-level pricing moves together.
Why are only M.2 2280 NVMe drives included?
Holding form factor and interface class constant reduces composition noise. Portable, SATA, 2230, and enterprise products serve different buyers and often carry different premiums.
Are PCIe 5.0 SSDs included?
No. PCIe 5.0 products remain a premium technology tier and are excluded from the PCIe 4.0 index so changing technology mix cannot masquerade as a price change.
Are SSDs with heatsinks included?
No. The standard basket uses non-heatsink M.2 2280 representatives. Console-licensed and heatsink variants can include accessory or licensing premiums.
Can products enter or leave the basket?
Yes. Hard eligibility failures pause immediately. Other unavailable products receive a grace period, and composition is deliberately reviewed rather than silently rewritten. Historical points retain their original basket.
Data & method
How is price per terabyte calculated?
The listed drive price is divided by nominal capacity in gigabytes and multiplied by 1,000. A $150 nominal 1TB drive therefore equals $150 per TB.
Does the chart use formatted usable capacity?
No. It uses the manufacturer-listed nominal capacity. Operating systems may display a smaller usable figure because of decimal-versus-binary units, formatting, and reserved space.
How are historical and live observations combined?
Historical daily listings are collapsed to product-month medians and chain-linked on overlapping products. Live checks are collapsed to product-week medians. Both trend segments are rebased to 100 at the clearly marked handoff.
How are outliers handled?
Listings must pass deterministic product, availability, demand, and plausible-price rules. Sharp changes can be queued for separate page verification rather than accepted merely because an API returned a number.
What happens when a collection run fails?
A failed run is recorded as failed and does not create a zero-price point. Stale or unavailable data is identified instead of being presented as a fresh observation.
Can I download the SSD chart data?
Yes. The chart provides a CSV export of the selected capacity series using the same public snapshot that renders the visible graph.
Buying context
Are SSD prices rising or falling?
The latest direction is calculated only after at least two successful weekly points. The chart describes observed movement; it does not infer a future path from one listing or one week.
When will SSD prices drop?
This tracker does not forecast a date. NAND supply, product transitions, demand, promotions, and retailer inventory may affect listings, but the live series cannot reliably predict when they will change.
What is a good price for a 1TB SSD?
Use the current 1TB basket median as a market-context reference for comparable internal PCIe 4.0 drives, then check performance, endurance, warranty, seller, and compatibility for the exact product.
Is the cheapest SSD always the best value?
No. A very low listing may reflect an obscure seller, weak endurance, low stock, a different interface, or a product near retirement. The index deliberately avoids being a cheapest-offer leaderboard.
Is this the same as NAND flash pricing?
No. NAND contract and spot markets concern underlying flash components. This chart measures finished consumer SSD listings, which also reflect controllers, firmware, packaging, warranties, channels, and retailer decisions.
Does this chart compare SSD and HDD prices?
No. HDD price-per-capacity is an adjacent but different market. A credible HDD comparison needs its own product universe, exclusions, and historical methodology.
