Read this before using the number
There is no memory PPI, and the index named “semiconductor” is the wrong one
BLS retired its memory product line in 2015. What remains needs choosing on evidence rather than on the most convincing series title.
No DRAM series exists
The memory and microprocessor product-line index was discontinued in 2015. A scan of the current PPI release returns no memory or DRAM series at all, so no chart can show a live memory PPI.
The narrow index misleads
Semiconductor and Related Device Manufacturing sounds exact, but it is dominated by logic, analog and discrete devices. It has recently moved opposite to memory prices, so its name is a trap rather than a guide.
This basket tracks memory better
The broader NAICS 3344 component index moves with the Korea customs memory signal charted elsewhere on this site. It is still a basket including boards, connectors and passives, so read it as direction, not as a memory quote.

Lagging and heavily revised
The reference month publishes about two weeks later, and each index is recalculated across three interim months before being posted as final four months after first publication. Recent months are provisional, and contract-based producer prices turn more slowly than spot markets.

What is the semiconductor producer price index?
It is a monthly index published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics measuring the prices US producers receive for semiconductors and other electronic components. This page charts the NAICS 3344 industry index, distributed through the St. Louis Fed FRED service. The latest reading is 73.1 for July 2026.
What is the latest semiconductor PPI reading?
For July 2026 the index stands at 73.1, which is +27.1% year over year and -0.6% month over month. Producer prices are therefore higher than a year earlier.
What does the index number actually mean?
The index is scaled so that December 1984 equals 100. A reading of 73 means producer prices for this industry are about 27 percent below their December 1984 level in index terms. Because the index reflects quality-adjusted prices over four decades of semiconductor improvement, the absolute level matters far less than its direction and rate of change.
Should I read the index level, the year-over-year change, or the month-over-month change?
Use year over year for cycle direction because it removes seasonal timing. Use month over month to spot turns early, accepting that single months are noisy and get revised. The index level is mainly useful for comparing against its own history rather than as a price.
What do the advanced chart indicators show?
Advanced view adds 3-, 6-, and 12-month simple moving averages plus a 6-month band at two population standard deviations, and an optional month-on-month sub-panel. Moving-average periods are calendar months. They are descriptive overlays calculated from published observations, not forecasts.

Yes. Export CSV downloads every published month with the index value and the calculated month-over-month and year-over-year changes. The underlying index is public BLS data redistributed through FRED.
What it covers
Is there a producer price index for DRAM or memory chips?
Not any more. BLS discontinued its memory and microprocessor product-line index in 2015, and no memory-specific or DRAM-specific PPI series is currently published. Any chart claiming to show a live memory PPI is showing something broader.
Why does this page use the broad electronic-component index instead of the narrower semiconductor one?
Because it tracks memory far better. Measured against this site's own Korea customs memory unit-value series, the NAICS 3344 electronic-component index moves with memory prices, while the narrower Semiconductor and Related Device Manufacturing index has recently moved in the opposite direction. The narrower index carries the word semiconductor but is dominated by logic, analog and discrete devices, so it is the worse memory proxy despite the better-sounding name.
What products are inside this index?
Output of US establishments manufacturing semiconductors and other electronic components. That includes integrated circuits, printed circuit boards, connectors, capacitors, resistors and similar components. It is a basket, not a single product, and it is not a memory-only measure.
Does this measure global chip prices?
No. PPI measures prices received by domestic US producers for output sold in the United States. Much of the world's memory is manufactured in Korea, Taiwan, Japan and China, so this index captures the US producer slice rather than the global market.
How does this compare with the Korea memory export proxy on this site?
They answer different questions and are kept on separate pages for that reason. The Korea chart is a customs unit value in dollars per kilogram covering Korean memory exports. This chart is a US producer price index covering a broad component basket. They are separately sourced and separately labelled, and neither is used to adjust the other.

Where does this semiconductor PPI data come from?

How lagging is PPI data?
The reference month is published roughly two weeks later, so the figure shown is for a month that has already ended. On top of that publication lag, producer prices themselves reflect negotiated and contract transactions, so they turn more slowly than spot markets. Treat this as confirmation of a trend rather than an early warning.
Do PPI numbers get revised?
Yes, and substantially more than most series. Effective with data for November 2021, each index undergoes five iterative updates: it is recalculated for three interim months after first issuance and posted as final four months after original publication. Recent months on this chart should therefore be read as provisional.
Is this index seasonally adjusted?
No. The published series is not seasonally adjusted, which is why year-over-year comparison is the safer way to read direction. A single month-over-month move can reflect seasonal timing rather than an underlying price change.
Why does semiconductor PPI fall over long periods when chip prices feel like they rise?
Producer price indexes adjust for quality change. When a newer component delivers more capability for the same money, part of that is recorded as a price decline rather than a product change. Over decades this produces a long downward drift in semiconductor indexes even through periods when buyers pay more for a given part.
How often does this page update?
The collector runs monthly after the BLS release window and republishes the snapshot atomically. Every stored month is kept as an immutable revision, so a revised print is added rather than overwriting the original figure.
Interpretation
Can this index predict retail RAM or SSD prices?
Not reliably. It measures US producer selling prices for a broad component basket, while retail memory prices reflect a different product mix, different geography, distribution margins and promotional cycles. This site charts retail prices separately and does not claim one series mechanically drives the other.
Why can this index disagree with memory prices in the news?
Because the basket, geography, quality adjustment and revision schedule all differ from any single product price. A broad US producer index can rise modestly while a specific memory contract price doubles, or fall while headlines report shortages. Disagreement is normal and is usually a composition difference rather than an error.
Is this investment advice?
No. This is a descriptive chart of a public statistical series. It does not recommend securities, forecast earnings, time a purchase, or explain why any market moved. Use primary company disclosures and specialist pricing sources for decisions that need those claims.
